VEVC Recommends DC Fast Charging Priority Locations for Vancouver Island

There are currently four DC Fast Chargers (DCFCs) on Vancouver Island that provide Level 3 fast charging for electric vehicles (EVs). These are located in Victoria, Colwood, Duncan and Nanaimo.  DC Fast Chargers (aka Level 3) can provide an 80% charge for most of the popular EVs in just over 30 minutes.

The Victoria Electric Vehicle Club (VEVC) Board has approved a report on a recommended priority for five additional DC Fast Chargers on Vancouver Island. Nine additional DCFC sites were reviewed in order to provide for the desirable spacing of 50 km to 70 km between chargers including three potential alternative locations near the intersection of Highway 19 and Hwy 4 that goes west to Tofino.

DCFC chargers are not recommended near the ferry terminals at Sidney, Nanaimo or Comox due to concerns about excessive queuing that would likely occur near ferry arrival and departure times.

The Victoria Electric Vehicle Club recommends that additional DCFC chargers be considered (in priority order) for Parksville, Courtenay, Campbell River, Port Alberni and Canoe Creek.
