TIME TO WRITE YOUR MP

We’ve promised to generate some ideas urging our federal politicians to use the 60 day pause in the EV mandate to develop an updated version. To that end, VicEVA Board Secretary Ted Davies has penned a couple of form letters of advocacy to use as a model in writing to your local MP.

Please understand that just sending the form letter helps. But you help a lot more by personalizing it with your own thoughts, anecdotes and sense of purpose.

And when it comes to stuff like this — Sooner is better than later as the government may already be formulating a new mandate.

Information on your MP can be found with a simple Google search of your riding. These are the Parliamentarians on the South Island:

Subject: Support for a Strong EV Mandate to Meet Canada’s Climate Goals

Dear [MP’s Name],

I am writing to you regarding the federal government’s recent announcement of a 60-day pause to
review the 2026 mandate for electric vehicle (EV) adoption. While I understand the need to carefully
consider policies that affect Canadians, I urge you to advocate for maintaining a clear and ambitious EV
mandate between 2026 and 2035.

Transportation is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. Meeting our
national climate goals, international commitments, and protecting future generations requires firm
action now. EV adoption targets are a critical part of that strategy. Without a mandate, Canada risks
falling behind other countries in reducing emissions, attracting investment, and fostering innovation in
clean technology.

An EV mandate also brings economic benefits. Automakers, battery manufacturers, and charging
infrastructure providers are making decisions today about where to invest. A strong and consistent
policy signal from the government will give industry the certainty it needs to expand operations in
Canada, creating good jobs and ensuring that Canadian workers and consumers are not left behind in
the global shift to cleaner transportation.

At the same time, I recognize that the transition must be fair and practical. This means continuing to
support investments in charging infrastructure, ensuring affordability of EVs for households, and
providing assistance to workers and communities affected by the transition. A flexible but firm
mandate—with interim targets between 2026 and 2035—will allow for progress while addressing these
challenges responsibly.

Canada has an opportunity to lead, not lag, in the global shift toward clean transportation. I urge you to
support the continuation of a strong EV mandate as an essential tool in reaching our climate change
goals and building a sustainable future for Canadians.

Thank you for your attention and for your leadership on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Subject: Keep Canada on Track with a Strong EV Mandate
Dear [MP’s Name],

I urge you to support maintaining a clear EV mandate between 2026 and 2035. A pause in policy risks
delaying progress on climate goals and weakening Canada’s competitiveness. Three key reasons to keep
a strong mandate:

  1. Climate Leadership
Transportation is one of Canada’s largest sources of emissions. Without ambitious EV targets, we cannot realistically meet our 2030 and 2050 climate commitments. A mandate is the most effective way to drive adoption at scale.
  2. Economic Growth & Jobs
Global automakers and clean-tech companies are investing where governments provide certainty. A
strong Canadian EV policy will attract investment, grow battery and manufacturing supply chains here, and create high-quality jobs for Canadians.
  3. Fairness & Accessibility
A clear mandate must be paired with support: expanding charging networks, ensuring EV affordability, and helping workers and communities in transition. With these measures, all Canadians can benefit from cleaner, more affordable transportation.
  4. Canada has the chance to lead in the global clean economy. Weakening or delaying the EV mandate
would risk jobs, investment, and our climate future. I encourage you to advocate for a strong, balanced policy that keeps us on track.
    Sincerely,
    [Your Name]
