Hi everyone

I'm actively looking for a used EV as a second car to use the majority of the time for trips around the thriving Greater Victoria area.

Given their abundance it will most likely be a 24 kwh Leaf with a good battery. I've visited Motorize in Sidney for a test drive and a chat - lots of good information. I wanted to pose a couple of questions to help in the decision:

- what real-world range are people getting with the 24kwh battery? From what I've read on other posts to this site and other stuff on the web, it seems like it's possible to get up to 100 miles on a full charge in a climate like Victoria. Is that true??

- what difference to the range does the hybrid (heat pump) heater on the SV/SL make compared to the resistance-only S heater? Do you avoid using it during the winter and use the seat/steering wheel heaters instead?

Cheers

Graham

You might also consider a Chevy Volt as they only have an 18kw battery with about 90km. range but they have an onboard generator too for longer trips

Hi Graham,

Everything I have read about the Heat Pump vs Resistance is to definitely get the heat pump. Apparently it hardly drains the battery as compared to the resistance heater.  thats just what i have read.

I would also like to know what kind of ranges people are getting on their 24kwh batterys. ive heard as low as 100KM to as high as 150KM.

Thanks Limbery and Clive.

I really want to get a pure EV and avoid ICE maintenance. It's going to be a second car and we'll keep our 7 year old subaru outback for long trips and hauling kayaks etc.

I spoke to the Motorize people about heat pump vs pure resistance heating. and given that our mileage will be 90% in town with little highway they don't think it will be significant having an S, partly because the lower speed will reduce wind-chill of the car!

I will also use the heated seats (which they say is powered by the 12v battery, not the lithium) to reduce the space heating.

With regard to range they reckon you can achieve 150km or so with a decent battery if you drive appropriately e.g. not 120km/h on the highway.

So I've put a deposit on a 2016 S with a 96% battery ;-)

Cheers

Graham
